Texas, Texas A&M, Oklahoma, and Oklahoma State to Remain in "Big 12"
Breathe a little. It looks like the Sun Devils football schedule will not be top 10 in the SOS rankings every year. With the decision of the Longhorns, Aggies, Sooners, and Cowboys to remain in the Big-12 minus 2, the Devils will continue to have a shot at a Pac-10 title, a longshot for the time being.
Pac-10 commish Larry Scott will continue to look for other expansion opportunities (cough...cough...UTAH...cough...New Mexico...cough). Utah seems a likely candidate, although with the addition of Boise St. to the Mountain West, they may find it best suited to stay put. Chime in with who else you think might join the Pac-11!

phew
I mean, I thought it could have been interesting, but I bet we would have been one of the bottom feeders. For decades. Once every 8 years, we might have a 9 win season with a mature squad, but that’s it.
With the current makeup, we still have a shot.

Completely Agree
We were going to get to see good teams come through here but it would be tough for ASU to get out of the bottom.
Yep
If you look at our current success in the Pac 10 — 31 years and 2 titles — I’d say that ratio would not have changed.

If (when?) Utah gets an invitation, they are good as gone

Unless California falls into the ocean in the next 24 hours before the contracts can be signed, Utah is accepting the Pac 10’s offer.
I'd like to get Utah in the Pac-10

I can't stand fair-weather/bandwagon fans, stick with your team, throughout the good and the bad. And don't switch to whichever team wins the Super Bowl each year.
expansion
I understood the ideas behind the aggressive play, but for now, the league will now have to spend every waking moment kissing Texas’ rear end…which is what they are doing in the Big XII. I have had my own ideas which are far less radical, but I doubt they are high profile enough for the league. I know SMU is ready to spend big bucks to get back to the big time (kind of what got them where they are in the first place) but they would get a presence in the Dallas market, and either Rice or Houston would give them visibility in that market. These are two top ten TV markets. You could still add Utah, if that desire is there (which probably the fall back), and still have the Texas presence the coaches want. Might not be at the Texas/Texas A&M level but it is an idea. That would be 14 teams, and somewhere down the line you could reasonably add two more teams, if the Texas butt kissing becomes in vogue again. You think Nebraska went to the Big Ten (12) for “only” money? Believe me, they got tired of kissing steer rump, too.
Rice, Houston, SMU
Nobody in Texas gives a crap about those schools. That’s not really a “presence” in those markets. It’s more of a feeble attempt.

I think I'm relieved this didn't happen as well
I’m slightly torn because I would’ve gotten to see alot more games in Texas since I live here. But, ASU would’ve been basically dead in the water competitively.
I did want something crazy to happen though just to happen so I was a little disappointed.
The Pac 10 will be fine once they get the new TV deal negotiated. Everyone will make more money, and the league will be stronger if Utah does join (CU just pretty much sucks at every sport so I’m not all that excited about them).

how about
No one. Stay at 11 and wait and see what shakes out elsewhere, since the Big Ten may make a big move in the next year or so, and the Big 12 may yet collapse on its own. Utah isn’t valuable enough to bring on just the for sake of expanding, especially if there’s still a chance to grab bigger fish.
Looks like it's too late
I actually like the addition of Utah. Comptetitevly they are probably better than ASU, Arizona, OSU, and WSU right now. It makes the league stronger.
I think it’s pretty clear that Scott and the Presidents felt like CU was a given and the Texas/Oklahoma schools were longshots to begin with. CU and Utah make so much more sense.
I’m also not worried about the money or having to split it 12 ways instead of 10. The new deal they’ll negotiate and the likely new Pac 10 Network will provide plenty of money to the member schools.

Sigh...
definitely not thrilled about this move if it is real. Oh well. Hopefully the league network is a huge hit, everyone finds a good compromise on division structure and scheduling, and things all work out overall.
Can you explain why you aren't thrilled with this?
To get it out of the way — I don’t really care about the money aspect. Adding them may reduce the split to other teams, but I doubt it.
Competitively it makes sense to add CU and Utah — considering the other options are like New Mexico or SDSU.
I think the P16 super-conference idea would’ve been cool — but I think it’s clear that isn’t going to happen for a while. I guess what I’m saying is I don’t see what other “bigger fish” there are to grab out there.

I'm with Dirk...
I think this couldn’t have worked out any better. I’m guessing the divisions will be: Washington WSU Colorado Utah Oregon and OSU. ASU UA USC UCLA Cal and Stanford. That is 3-4 winnable games in our division each year… Then probably 2 sets out of the other division…we can beat colorado, oregon state, wsu…all winnable games. We should be in a better position to go to a bowl game.
Actually
It’s gonna be CU, Utah, ASU, uofa, USC, and UCLA in the South.
Stan, Cal, Oregon, OSU, UW, and WSU in the North

Fair enough...
We play USC closely most years…just need to get over the hump with UCLA…can’t seem to beat them even when they aren’t that good. U of A is toss up right now. we’ll play colorado tough and i’m not sure about utah.
Utah will murder us
They haven’t decided if they’re gonna keep the 9 game conf schedule. If they do, it’ll be 5 vs your division and 4 vs the other. If they do 8 games like all the other 12 team conferences do then it’ll be 4 and 4.
We will be in the bottom of that division until Erickson is gone and we get a better coach in here.

Coach McElwain would fit in great with ASU.
I’d be down with that.
And if they follow the SEC model it will be five interdivision games, one rivalry, and two rotating home-n-home games.
I also hope the Fiesta Bowl group makes a hard play to have the game in Glendale. At least then you could have a chance to move the game to a 4-5pm start and get airtime on the east coast televisions.

bah, my head isn't working.

I'm guessing the Champ Game
Will be in a neutral site like Vegas. PHX is a long way to go for fans of the NW schools who would then also be asked to travel to a bowl game a month later.
As for the next head coach — it’s really gotta be someone that has ties to the west coast. I don’t know enough about McElwain, but it’s crucial that the next staff keeps the SoCal pipeline coming.

Read up a bit on McElwain
I wouldn’t be opposed to seeing him get an interview. He does have some West Coast ties so that might work. Good idea.

It's almost official. The utah anouncement will be at rice-eccles stadium on thursday or friday.
