The Day After: Assessing The Wisconsin Loss
24 hours after kickoff, and I'm still at a loss. There was a lot to like about the Sun Devils yesterday, from their speed to the play calling.
In 2009, ASU was plagued with slow, safe players and moribund running schemes. The quarterback was unable to make accurate throws, and the team showed no confidence in itself.
Traveling to Madison, the Sun Devils weren't supposed to have a chance. But this team has swagger, speed, and a chip on their shoulders. We are looking at a team that ran wild on special teams, and showed the nation that they can hang with anyone.
Cheers:
Steven Threet, QB: Threet is surprisingly mobile, moving around in the pocket, avoiding sacks, and making accurate throws on the run. After this performance, Sun Devil fans have to be very happy that he will be around next season.
Vontaze Burfict, MLB: Burfict stepped up and played a strong game, but he missed a few assignments and was baited on a few play actions and running plays. He is still young and will mature into one of the best linebackers in the nation.
Deantre Lewis, RB: Lewis is insanely fast. In the preseason, the coaching staff was very enthusiastic about Lewis and his big play abilities. This was proven yesterday after Lewis picked up 122 yards on only nine carries. This type of talent has been missing in Tempe for the past few seasons - we don't need to worry about that anymore.
Coach Dennis Erickson: This was the type of hard-fought performance you want to see from an Erickson-coached team. One question, though: I know this is a precarious position, but should the Sun Devils have gone for two at the end of the game? It's hard to tell, but looking back on the game, one has to wish that ASU would have risked the tie for the win.
Jeers:
Thomas Weber, K: Weber has not been right since 2008's loss to UNLV. He looks shellshocked on the field, missing an easy field goal in the first quarter and being blocked on an extra point attempt in the 4th. I don't know if it's a mental thing or if he just doesn't have it anymore, but ASU has lost several games over the past two years due to missed kicks and lost opportunities. It just can't happen anymore.
The important thing to take from this game is the skill positions are strong and the defense is hungry. ASU looks prepared to make a solid run in the Pac-10.

In all honesty I was screaming at my bro-in-law cause he wanted to go for two. I said the right play was to kick the PAT, play good defense and have a chance to win, but at the worst have the tie. Then Armageddon struck.
My beef with everything is when you’re stuck at 4m left, with an offense that has been taking 2-4 minutes to move why in the hell don’t you start using the timeouts then. I felt the defense needed the extra breaths in-between the snaps and if we’re going to play the “what-if” game then that’s where I’m putting my eggs. You get a three-and-out instead of the crap that became the final four minutes then you have the game in your hands instead of what transpired.
Hell, if so many plays are not missed (first FG, runback before half, dropsies and incomplete passes on TD chances) you guys win running away. We’re talking about how ASU is back with HC DE’s tutelage at this point instead of commiserating about the loss.
This will either do one or two things (the loss). Either this team realizes they are a middle tier team in the PAC-10 with a chance to shake a lot of things up, or they quit and the rest of this year will be abysmal.
Wear your gold; be loud; be there next Saturday. This team needs a 12th man to carry them over the hump against the class of the PAC-10. Hell, if you get going you might have this Bama fan losing his voice Saturday when it’s all said and done.
…oh, and don’t give up on this team. They’ve not given up on you.
It's not what you've done but what you are doing that matters.

I agree with the jeering of Webber
I know it wasn’t a great angle or anything — but you have to freaking make that FG in the first half. If we can’t rely on our kicker to make a FG from under 30 yards we aren’t going to win anything.
I will say this — my confidence in this team is soaring. I don’t know if we’re good enough to beat Oregon (probably not) — but I just get the feeling that if this team starts to get some of the breaks they haven’t gotten for the last 2 years an upset like that COULD happen.
Can’t wait to start Pac-10 play.

We have a shot...
And that is way more than we have been able to say the last few years. It is a good feeling to have, thats for sure.

It’s easy to look back and say they should have gone for 2 when they just lost by a blocked kick.
But it was the right decision at the time.
We were winning throughout the game, take the easy point, win in overtime.
No need to risk it all on one play.
It was great being there and hard to stomach the loss
I was very proud to be a Sun Devil fan this weekend in Madison. Make no mistake about it, we beat Wisconsin all over the field except for the only thing that matters. ASU looked so much faster than Wisconsin it was amazing. I thought I would pass along some of the things that I kept hearing over and over again from Wisconsin fans.
1. They couldn’t believe how many fans from Arizona came up. They said for a non-conference game there were more ASU fans than they can remember with any other team.
2. We beat them – Heard multiple times after that game that WI was so lucky to come away with a win. They felt they were beat pretty bad.
3. Speed – They were really amazed with the speed and athleticism of ASU, especially at the skilled positions.
4. Threet – People kept talking about how Threet looked so good as our QB and that he looked like a big time qb.
5. During halftime I was walking around and some old guy decked out in Wisconsin gear was walking around shouting, “can anyone down here play special teams. We need people to play special teams, somebody go help our team.” It was pretty funny.
I really hope the Sun Devil fans come out in full force this weekend against Oregon. They will need a packed stadium.
Good points
We definitely do have swagger this year. And the speed is an incredible change from previous teams, even our qb can move a little bit in the pocket and that’s awesome. They are gonna need this speed against a probably faster Oregon team. They have lightening speed.
You’re right. I’ve been talking about the UNLV curse forever now haha. Weber is no good. He lost it. He’s one of the main reason we lost that game. There’s been too many missed kicks that kept ASU from winning, and I hate to blame it on Weber, but it’s getting ridiculous. He’s lost his touch. 25 yards?! Should never happen.
We have to get our composure in order and stop these stupid penalties. ASU should have gotten the ball back from Wisconsin at the end of the game. It was going to be a crucial 3rd and 5 play. Wisconsin was gonna run our front seven is too good to penetrate in that situation. But Brooks got the stupid penalty. Game over. Lost over stupid penalties again.
