ASU Hockey: Freshman Defenseman Shines in Season Debut

Arizona State's hockey team did what they needed to do on Thursday night against Division Two opponent Texas A&M. That was to take care of business.

The Sun Devils outmatched the Aggies in Oceanside Ice Arena for a decisive 13-0 blowout victory. Goaltenders Joe D'Elia and Corey Frank combined for shutout after facing just six shots on net.

The real story of the night was how much the freshman skaters produced in their career debuts as Sun Devils. All six newcomers—Brian McGinty, Faiz Khan, Stephen Collins, Sean Ritchie, Brett Blomgren, and Jordan Young—each scored a goal in the game and combined for 17 points.

In his first game at ASU, Young ripped the back of the net twice and assisted four other goals. The star freshman from Cave Creek, Arizona finished the night with a team-high six points and also had his potential hat trick goal taken away as time expired in the second period.

Head coach Greg Powers hopes that Young will do some great things for the Sun Devils throughout his career. We will see how he handles himself against a Division One opponent and cross state rival this coming weekend.

Arizona State hosts the University of Arizona on Friday and Saturday nights in Tempe. The Sun Devils look to continue their 24-game win streak against the Wildcats with the help of Jordan Young and company.

We'll have a preview of this rivalry series later in the week here on House of Sparky.
