ASU held out of BCS rankings for second consecutive week

The Sun Devils had a bye this week, but had a chance to sneak in the BCS standings through the back door with losses from teams ahead of them.

The Arizona State football team cracked the Associated Press top 25 poll on Sunday morning, but the Sun Devils weren't able to break into the BCS rankings on Sunday night.

The AP poll doesn't factor into the BCS formula, although many experts assumed the Sun Devils were on the cusp of a ranking last week after walloping Washington in a 53-24 victory last Saturday.

Arizona State's cause was aided by losses from the 24th and 25th teams in the BCS rankings, as No. 24 Nebraska and No. 25 Oregon State both fell out of the second edition of the rankings with losses on Saturday. Nebraska lost on the road in a matchup with an unranked Minnesota squad while Oregon State lost a nail-biter against No. 5 Stanford.

On Sunday, SB Nation predicted the Sun Devils would appear as the No. 25 team in the BCS standings. However, a familiar foe, the Notre Dame Fighting Irish held down the 25th spot in the latest rankings.

The Sun Devils are still unranked in the USA Today Coaches' Poll, yet they did find themselves ranked 25th in the Harris Poll, which does factor into the BCS rankings. It's presumed that the Sun Devils are also thought of favorably by the computers, especially considering their 5-2 record against one of the nation's most difficult schedules to date.

A victory on Thursday night against Washington State should do more than enough to ensure the Sun Devils a spot in next week's rankings. As Todd Graham routinely states, the only ranking he cares about is the final one.

The Pac-12 is the only conference with two teams in the top five of this week's BCS rankings as No. 5 Stanford is joined by No. 2 Oregon which hopped over No. 3 Florida State after a win against UCLA on Saturday.
