The Sun Devils managed one hit in a shutout loss to the Oregon State Beavers on Friday night.
Oregon State left hander Matt Boyd held the Arizona State Sun Devils in check all night, leading the No. 3 Beavers to a 5-0 victory Friday night. Boyd threw a complete game shutout, allowing only one hit and striking out 11 Sun Devils. The senior improves to 5-0 on the season, with his ERA dropping below 1.50.
ASU shortstop Drew Stankiewicz started the game off with a single to centerfield off the Oregon Stat ace. However he was stranded at second base after a seal. It was the only Sun Devil hit of the game.
Oregon State got on the board in the first inning when designated hitter Dylan Davis singled to left centerfield, scoring right fielder Ryan Barnes.
The Beavers put up a run in the second on a Jake Rodriguez RBI double. Arizona State didn't help right hander Trevor Williams in the third inning, when first basemen David Graybill misplayed a fly ball, allowing Michael Conforto to score to give Oregon State a 3-0 lead.
Williams finished the evening with seven hits and three earned runs allowed in five innings pitched. In his last two outings, the Sun Devil ace has given up 10 earned runs and 20 hits.
Oregon State added a run in the fifth and the sixth. However the night belonged to Boyd, who struck out three of the last six batters he faced.
The Sun Devils did not get a runner into scoring position after the first inning, and grounded into two double plays in the game.
Oregon State was led at the plate by Michael Conforto, Kavin Keyes and Jake Rodriguez, who all finished with multi-hit games. Oregon State improves to 20-1 on the season and the Beavers are a perfect 4-0 in Pac-12 play.
The Sun Devils fall to 12-6-1 on the season and have lost four out of their last five games. First pitch tomorrow for game two is scheduled for 2:05 p.m.
