ASU Football: 'Summer of Legends' No. 53 Larry Gordon

Larry Gordon rocked his fro equally well as he wore No. 53. - ASU Athletics

Current Sun Devil linebackers are held to lofty expectations, thanks to the foot prints left by number 53 and more.

The Backstory: Number 53 will always belong to this legend, and there are at least 150 reasons why. During the 1970's, he was arguably the toughest guy around Tempe. Therefore, we decided to honor Larry Gordon as the best ASU player to rock number 53.

The Player: Larry Gordon (1972-1975) The list of accomplishments for Gordon seemingly never ends. The Louisiana, Monroe product didn't play during the days of social media, otherwise Gordon would've been trending on twitter every Saturday. During Gordon's fist two years, the Sun Devils combined to go 21-3. However, Gordon can't take any significant credit for the success.

From then on, any conversation about ASU football started with Gordon being mentioned. In the 1974 season he accumulated 131 tackles, and followed it up by posting 150 tackles. In addition, Gordon led the team in tackles for loss in 1974 with 10. By doing so, receiving awards became customary.

The following is a list of Gordon's best triumphs over the 1974-975 campaigns: Honorable Mention All-American, All-Western Athletic Conference First Team and Honorable Mention, East-West Shrine game participant and Fiesta Bowl MVP.

Besides Terrell Suggs, who is typically considered ASU's best ever linebacker, Gordon is right up there at the top.

In the Pros: Countless great college players never even make it to the NFL, but Gordon can't relate to that problem. Gordon was selected by the Miami Dolphins in the 1st round of the 1976 draft at 17 overall. Unfortunately, Gordon passed away at only 28 years old (1983) due to heart disease, ending his football career and life prematurely.

Who Wears It Now: No active player wears number 53.

Honorable Mention

Scott Peters - Peters was the key piece of ASU's offensive line at guard and center in the late 1990's and early 2000's.
