The upset alert went off ealy, but Sacramento State didn't get any points out of their 16-play opening drive. Robert Nelson flew off the edge and blocked Jesse Aguilar's 33-yard field goal attempt. ASU shock off the rust and ended the first quarter with a 14-0 lead.
After the rough start for the defense, Taylor Kelly marched right back down the field for seven points. Kelly connected with De'marieya Nelson for the 16-yard score. The drive lasted 11 plays and 80 yards, while Marion Grice did the majority of damage with 31 yards.
The Hornets didn't score in week one against San Jose State, but quarterback Garrett Safron appeared eager to bounce back. Safron converted four third down and longs, varying from five yards to nine yards. Morris Norrise was on the receiving end of most of the tosses, accumulating .
ASU's second opportunity on defense went much smoother, forcing Sacramento State to go three and out. The Sun Devils offense added seven more with 0:39 seconds left in the first on Kelly's 41-yard touchdown to Kevin Ozier.
On the downside, Will Sutton stayed down on the field nursing an unknown ailment, but he was able to walk off on his own power. Sutton returned on the next possession and recovered Ezikiel Graham's fumble.
