Arizona State 2023-24 season comes to an embarrassing end in first-round of the Pac-12 tournament

LAS VEGAS, Nv. — Arizona State (14-18, 8-12 Pac-12) ended its season in an embarrassing 90-57 loss at the hands of Utah, on Thursday night. The Sun Devils tied a record in the final game as members of the Pac-12, marking the largest margin of defeat in the men’s conference tournament history.

ASU failed to gain any momentum while the absence of guard Jose Perez was glaring. The Sun Devils faced a 46-18 hole in the first half.

ASU shot 22-for-70 (31%) on field goals and 3-for-19 (16%) from 3-point range. Junior guard Frankie Collins led the team with 20 points, with sophomore guard Kamari Lands joining him as the only players in double figures.

“This is not acceptable for what my vision is for our basketball program,” head coach Bobby Hurley said. “We’re not in a good place right now, and it’s a terrible way to end it.”

From the opening tip, the Sun Devils’ intensity failed to show; a quality that the team showed flashes of throughout the season. But considering the timing, the unfortunate effort displayed on the court led to ASU’s first loss to the Utes in over two years.

In their final game, the dejected maroon and gold realized their fate.

“You have a vision for something better,” Hurley said. “That that’s going to be the lasting memory of us playing in the Pac-12? Wow, I mean that’s a terrible memory. Nine years of being in this league and coaching in this league and it’s going to be gone and that’s how we chose to go out. It doesn’t feel good.”

Utah shot an uncanny 19-for-27 (70%) on field goals in the first half, a number that went down to a more believable 13-for-27 (48%). Graduate student Cole Bajema had 22 points on the night as the Utes had four players reach double-digit points.

Hurley spoke about his intentions moving forward as a program as perhaps the water became murky this season for Hurley’s future in Tempe. According to Chris Karpman of SunDevilSource.com, Hurley has not signed the contract for his 3-year extension offered by ASU, only his term sheet.

Bobby Hurley hasn’t signed the contract extension he agreed to last year. He did sign the term sheet. The contract had a lot of Pac-12 language with the bonus structuring, which caused the holdup after Anderson departed. He’s expected to sign an updated version soon per sources.
— Chris Karpman (@ChrisKarpman) March 13, 2024

Hurley spoke about the revamping of the roster that needs to take place, especially with the move into a different athletic conference. As it stands, according to ESPN’s Joe Lunardi, the Big 12 has nine teams projected in the 2024 NCAA Tournament, the most by any conference.

“It’s for men,” Hurley said. “Grown-ass men in that league, so we have to make some changes.”

In the end, Hurley put the blame on himself for the season’s shortcomings and said he felt bad for players like senior center Alonzo Gaffney who has been in the program for three seasons and helped the Sun Devils reach the NCAA Tournament in 2023.

“I feel like you can say a lot of things about me as a coach,” Hurley said. “You can be critical of a lot of areas and different things that you may not like about my coaching style. My offense, my philosophies on defense, my in-game decisions, my rotations, I mean there’s a lot that goes into being a coach but I don’t think you would say he’s (Hurley) not going to fight or battle or get his team ready to compete or fight or battle.”

As far as motivation, Hurley said he failed to do his job Thursday night when the program needed him most.

“I failed miserably in that regard,” Hurley said. “This is not a reflection of my belief system in terms of just effort and will and knowing what it feels like when your season’s on the line and you have to play for your season and that’s the effort that you get? That’s my responsibility and I failed miserably.”

To her, there was no pressure. Scharf believed Arizona State had already clinched its upset win over the tenth-ranked UCLA Bruins.

With the upset win, ASU locked its third-straight winning season — its longest streak since 1997-2001. Head coach Jay Santos notched his third top-10 win in his career in maroon and gold as well as the third ranked win of the season (No. 17 Arizona and No. 25 Southern Utah).

“It was kind of a weird, crazy meet in my opinion,” Santos said. “Especially with how it ended and we weren’t sure that we were gonna be able to get there with that. I think we gave some stuff away. I think we started really well but then gave some stuff away, and then obviously they (ASU) kept fighting, they didn’t give up. Credit to them for not giving up because then they got the opportunity to do what they did and get that win against UCLA, the number 10 team in the country, which is always exciting.

Perhaps it was the alumni in attendance that championed the Sun Devils to victory.

“It’s amazing to bring them back into the program,” Santos said. “They had so much success during John (Spini)’s time, so it’s great to have them around and bring them back. Even just to have them see a meet like this and show them that we’re still doing it. We’re still trying to make them proud and hold up that legacy. It’s always great when things like that can come together.”

Senior Emily White sure felt the radiating support.

“I think that helped us a lot because we’ve been focusing on things like the fire and just bringing that competitive energy,” she said. “So the crowd definitely helped us channel that tonight and it was really fun.”

Scharf sent her and the eight other seniors off with a proper send-off. But for some, such jubilation was met with the realization that it was their last ride.

“I really enjoyed my five years here and I feel like I’ve taken every opportunity I can to just enjoy the experience,” she said. “I knew it was coming to an end eventually, but it’s definitely gonna be sad because it’s finally here.”

Without Jose Perez, the Sun Devils struggled mightily on offense, scoring just 16 second half points

LOS ANGELES, Ca. — It’s been a streaky season for Arizona State men’s basketball.

In the season finale, Arizona State (14-17, 8-12 Pac-12) surrendered runs of 18-0 and 22-3 to UCLA (15-16, 10-10 Pac-12). The Sun Devils could not survive the latter as the offense struggled mightily.

With important seeding for the final conference tournament still on the line, ASU’s play was shadowed by the departure of guard Jose Perez.

Perez, who abruptly quit on the team following its loss to USC just days prior, was not seen warming up with the team. He averaged 13.5 points per game and possessed the tools needed to score from anywhere, especially at the charity line where he attempted 191. Guard Frankie Collins is the next closest on the team with 95.

Arizona State coach Bobby Hurley confirmed Perez will no longer be with the team as he has “taken a position (to play) overseas.”

Perez reposted a video on his Instagram story stating, “there’s a thin line between loyalty and stupidity. I’m going to be loyal, but I’m not going to be stupid. I’m not going to be so loyal that I betray myself.”

His absence was glaring, as ASU mustered only 16 second half points.

Adam Miller was able to bear the load during the first half, providing 11 points off 4-for-7 from the field and 3-for-6 from deep. Jamiya Neal added eight points while Collins recorded five. As a team, ASU shot 50 percent.

The offense seemingly fell of a cliff, shooting just 22.7 percent after the intermission and its leading scorer, Collins, had just five points.

The path of the 2024 Sun Devils was anything but linear. The program started 4-0 in conference play before dropped seven of eight, which included five consecutive, and experienced the highs of upsetting ranked Washington State.

During that dreadful midseason slump, the Sun Devils surrendered runs of 13-0 in first loss to Washington; 15-0 in loss to Oregon in Eugene; 17-0 in loss to Oregon State; 17-2 in loss to Stanford; 8-0 and 9-0 runs in loss to Cal; 21-3 in loss to Colorado; 16-0 in overtime loss to Washington; 13-3 in second loss to Arizona; 10-0 in loss to USC; and runs of 18-0 and 22-3 in its most recent loss to UCLA.

Between the lack of depth, which Hurley eluded to, and overall talent, it’s been fickle.

ASU has locked in as the No. 11 seed and will face No. 6 Utah in the opening round of the final Pac-12 Tournament. This is the lowest seeding for ASU since coach Bobby Hurley took the reigns in 2015-16.

The Sun Devils defeated the Utes 82-70 and 85-77, but completing the season sweep of the same foe is tough, let alone without your best offensive weapon. Perez scored 26 and 21 points in each meeting.

Should ASU fall to Utah in the opening round of the tournament, Hurley will suffer his worst winning percentage in a season in his nine years in maroon and gold. Hurley and ASU agreed to a contract extension through 2025-26 with a $200,000 annual raise after locking in a spot in the NCAA Tournament in 2023.

Despite the underwhelming play and rather bizarre turns during the season, Hurley’s position does not seem in jeopardy as it braces for the Big 12, still without an athletic director.

Tipoff is set for Wednesday, March 13, at 8:30 p.m. PT

Arizona State continues its push for dominance over Cal, Stanford in conference titles

FEDERAL WAY, Wash.— Arizona State completed its quest for back-to-back Pac-12 Men’s Swim and Dive titles Saturday as they lapped the competition. The Sun Devils, who won their first conference title last year, beat Stanford by 303 points, the second largest margin of victory in Pac-12 history.

ASU broke three NCAA records, 11 program records and won 16 events over the week-long event.

Sophomore Hubert Kós broke the 200 back record with a finishing time of 1:35.69, a new NCAA record. The record was previously held by four-time Olympic gold medalist Ryan Murphy of Cal back in 2016.

Kós finished the championships with three individual titles when he won the 100 back and 200 individual medley earlier. He was also a part of the Sun Devils’ 400 team medley that took first place with a conference-record time of 2:58.49.

Junior Léon Marchand, a familiar name and certainly one that will be on your television sets this summer swimming for his native country of France in the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris, broke the 500 free record on Thursday. His 4:06.18 finishing time broke the previous record set by Kieran Smith of Florida back in 2021 at the SEC championships by 14-tenths of a second.

Marchand won two other individual titles: the 200 breast and the 400 individual medley en route to his third-straight Pac-12 Swimmer of the Meet. He was also a critical member of the NCAA record-breaking 200 team medley relay that finished in 1:20.55. Marchand was also a part of two other Sun Devil records in the 400 free relay and the 400 medley teams and his 40.90 split time in the 400 free set a program record.

The guard stated personal reasons for his departure

Arizona State men’s basketball suffered arguably its most devastating loss before tipoff of the season finale against UCLA — guard Jose Perez quit the team.

On Thursday, March 7, Perez scored a team-high 25 points in the loss to USC. On Saturday, March 9, it was reported Perez is no longer with the team, according to Cavan Malayter.

Perez did not take the court ahead of the season finale and left the team due to personal reasons that have not been yet disclosed.

Less than two weeks after upsetting then-No. 21 Washington State, Arizona State guard Jose Perez rode a wave of confidence and optimism regarding his teams ability to compete in the final two games before the Pac-12 Tournament.

“Get those two and then it’s time to play ball,” Perez said after losing to USC. “It’s win or go home time...We gotta go out with pride. Our pride gotta get in the way. We go, win out, get the best seed possible and see the standings, who we match up with. It’s all about matchups in March.”

ASU relied on Perez, who averaged 13.5 points a game, for his crafty ability to score and provide a spark for the offense. Now coach Bobby Hurley and the Sun Devils will be forced to navigate the final Pac-12 Tournament without him.

Utah pulls away during the second half of the first round of the Pac-12 Tournament

LAS VEGAS, Nv. — The conference trip to Las Vegas was a short one.

Before Arizona State women’s basketball could finish unpacking, it was sent home from the final Pac-12 conference tournament in the opening round, and its season promptly ended at the hands of Utah on Wednesday night, 71-60.

Having lost five consecutive before entering the tournament as the 11th seed, the Sun Devils (11-19 overall) slid into the tournament, and were handed their sixth straight and last loss.

Trayanna Crisp willed the Sun Devils to an early advantage over the Utes, holding seven of the teams 17 total points while shooting 75 percent from the field and forcing six turnovers through the first frame. As a team, ASU’s restless defense managed eight turnovers with a pair of steals, but the burning candle of the Sun Devils slowly dimmed as the night progressed.

ASU led by as many as seven points during the first 10 minutes. Utah clapped back to take an eight-point lead during the second quarter and held a four-point lead at half.

ASU coach Natasha Adair said her team needed to up the pressure and come out with the same urgency they did at the start.

And they did — for a bit.

Arizona State was at the mercy off Alissa Pili and Ines Vieira, who combined for 54 percent of the Utah’s points. And despite coming within four points a handful of times during the second half, ASU remained one step behind.

The lack of success from beyond the arc did the Sun Devils no favor, shooting just 1-for-7 (14.3 percent) during the second half compared to 37.5 percent from the first.

Pili collected 16 of her team-high 20 points and eight of her 11 total rebounds in the second half. Vieira, who sunk a half-court bank shot from beyond the mid-court logo to end the third quarter, accounted for 18 points, five rebounds and three assists while playing the entirety of the game.

Maty Wilke (10 points) and Kenna McQueen (11 points) also logged double digits for the Utes.

Crisp and Jalyn Brown were the only two Sun Devils to record double-digit points. Crisp, who found a quick seven points, was held scoreless until the second half where she erupted for 12. Jalyn Brown had 15 points.

Adair and ASU will now march forward to the Big 12.
