Arizona Sports Fans Need ASU Baseball To Succeed

Ask anyone about their favorite collegiate sports and the conversation will mostly focus on football and basketball.

Football and basketball are great sports and they do bring in the most revenue for the school, but NCAA baseball is often overlooked and under appreciated.

Baseball may not be the most popular sport, but it is “America’s pastime,” and should be of particular interest to ASU fans.

The baseball team at ASU is one of the most successful athletic teams on campus. With five national-championships and the third-most alumni to ever play Major League Baseball, there is no doubting the success of Sun Devil Baseball.

Due to NCAA sanctions and probations, the ASU baseball team will not be able to play in the postseason this year but that should not discourage Sun Devil fans.

While an appearance in the College World Series will not happen this year, the baseball team does have a chance to put some life and excitement back into ASU athletics.

The major sports in ASU have had a rough time lately.

The football team has gone three straight years without a bowl appearance. The basketball team is currently sitting at the bottom of the Pac-10. ASU basketball did finish second in the Pac-10 last year, but followed that up with a devastating first-round loss at home in the NIT.

ASU’s baseball team is not exempt from these disappointments as they did have an early exit from the College World Series last year. However, the Sun Devil baseball team now has a chance to revive excitement in ASU athletics.

In fact, they have a chance to revive even more than just ASU athletics. The ASU baseball team can provide the entire Phoenix area with a successful team to cheer for.

Phoenix was recently named the third most miserable sports city in the entire country because of the lack of championships and recent success.

It may just be college baseball, but for the most passionate of fans having at least one successful team will go a long way.

So far the ASU baseball is 6-1 and ranked No. 9 in the country. While they have not had any serious competition yet, this is a talented team as most ASU baseball teams are.

A postseason appearance may be impossible, but a regular-season Pac-10 championship could help restore some pride in Tempe.
