Sun Devils trying to win for ASU, Pac-10

Not only does the ASU softball team have a chance to make school history, but they have a chance to make conference history as well.

The Pac-10 Conference, which will become the Pac-12 in the 2011-2012 school year, has currently won 399 national championships in the 22 NCAA team sports.

If the No. 1 ASU softball team is able to finish off this magical season with the school’s 24th NCAA national championship, and second softball championship, then the Pac-10 would become the first conference to win 400 team championships.

The Pac-10, which leads all conferences in national championships, is also the proud owner of just over 1,700 individual championships.

While the Pac-10 is certainly rich with both academic and athletic tradition, the Sun Devils have had their fair share of championships as well.

Arizona State has won 23 NCAA national championships in team sports and many more individual titles.

Women’s golf and baseball have been the school’s most successful teams as they have won six and five titles, respectively.

The Sun Devils’ most recent championships came earlier this year courtesy of the wrestling team and the softball team won their first and only championship in 2008.

Both the ASU baseball and softball teams still have an opportunity to win a national championship this season, but baseball has shown signs of inconsistencies all year long, while the softball team has been nothing short of dominant and is thoroughly deserving of the number one overall seed.

If the Sun Devils are able to finish the 2011 season with a national championship then the Pac-10 (which will no longer exist as a 10 team conference) will finish as national champions as well.
