According to a source close to the situation, ASU kicker Bobby Wenzig has transferred to play for the Alabama State Hornets of the Southwestern Athletic Conference.
Wenzig will be the starting placekicker and punter for the other ASU in 2011, as explained by the source. He has also been given a full scholarship to play for the Hornets.
A quick search of the Sun Devils roster for 2011 shows that Wenzig is no longer listed.
When Thomas Weber went down in 2009 with a groin injury, Wenzig stepped in and took over field goal duties for four games. Wenzig played well, making 3 of 4 field goal attempts and 10 of 12 extra points.
Wenzig was the kicker for the road game to Georgia, and his field goal attempt with 4:31 left in the game was blocked by Georgia wide receiver A.J. Green. This key play allowed the Bulldogs to win the game with a field goal as time expired.
As for the current Sun Devils, redshirt freshman Alex Garoutte will take over the kicking duties with the graduation of Weber and the transfer of Wenzig. JUCO transfer Josh Hubner will make the leap from Scottsdale Community College to being the starting punter for ASU in 2011.
Both Garoutte and Hubner have local ties, graduating from Brophy Prep and Desert Mountain, respectively.
