Heading into the year, Arizona State's Jamal Miles was touted as one of the nation's premier return men, showing up on the Jet Award watch list after taking two kickoffs and one punt back for touchdowns in 2011.
However, he has struggled mightily on returns this season, averaging just 21.1 yards on kickoffs and 7.9 yards on punt returns. More importantly, he has fumble twice on returns, the latest coming near the end of the first half against Colorado.
That led to Todd Graham inserting Rashad Ross back deep to take the opening kickoff of the second half, and Ross wasted little time in making an impact.
That 100-yard touchdown was Ross' only return on special teams, but it was enough to earn the senior wide receiver the Pac-12 Conference's Special Teams Player of the Week. Miles last earned that distinction a year ago after his punt return touchdown against Oregon State.
Ross also opened the second half with a touchdown return against Boise State in the Maaco Bowl in December.
