ASU Football: Sun Devils Hand Out Awards at Team Banquet

The team gathered this weekend to have a banquet to honor players and Ring of Honor members.

Mark J. Rebilas-US PRESSWIRE

Saturday night, the Arizona State football team gathered for a team banquet in which their season-ending awards were handed out.

Here's who took home the hardware.

Pat Tillman Outstanding Academic Achievement Award

Winner: LB Brandon Johnson

Our Take: Johnson has excelled in the classroom with a 3.44 GPA as a sociology major, and has been a key special teams contributor for ASU. He was the only Sun Devil to be a first team Academic All-Pac-12 team.

Tim Landers Iron Man Award (Player who has displayed an exemplary work ethic in the weight room, on the field and in the community)

Winner: LB Carl Bradford

Our Take: Bradford's work ethic is renowned, and it paid off in a huge way this year, as he exploded in his first year as a starter to tally 10.5 sacks.

Bill Kajikawa Award (Freshman Award)

Winner: RB D.J. Foster

Our Take: But of course. Even though both Foster and Jaxon Hood were named Freshman All-Americans, it's hard to not honor Foster for his incredible season as a dual-threat.

Randall McDaniel Outstanding Offensive Lineman

Winner: LT Evan Finkenberg

Our Take: Finkenberg may not have the most talent nor receive the most attention, but the junior has quietly become a very solid tackle in the Pac-12.

Wilford "Whizzer" White Outstanding Running Back Award

Winner: Marion Grice

Our Take: Coming into the year, anyone but Cameron Marshall winning this would have been unbelievable. However, Grice's 17 touchdowns and huge performance against U of A made Grice the clear choice.

John Jefferson Outstanding Receiver Award
Winner: TE Chris Coyle, junior

Our Take: With ASU's wide receivers being a season-long problem, Coyle's emergence as a likely record-setter at tight end made him an invaluable weapon.

Danny White Offensive MVP
Winner: QB Taylor Kelly

Our Take: While Kelly's first season as a starter far exceeded all expectations, this is a bit of a surprise, as we would have given the nod to Grice. However, Kelly is very deserving after throwing for nearly 3,000 yards and 25 touchdowns.

Curley Culp Outstanding Defensive Lineman Award

Winner: DT Will Sutton

Our Take: Duh.

Ron Pritchard Outstanding Linebacker Award

Winner: Brandon Magee

Our Take: A true Sun Devil, Magee became the face of the program off the field and one of the top performers on it. Coming back from his Achilles injury, Magee leads the team with 104 tackles as well as 11.5 tackles-for-loss, 6.5 sacks and two interceptions.

Darren Woodson Outstanding Secondary Award

Winner: Alden Darby, safety, junior

Our Take: Darby was been a playmaker in his first full season as a starter with 72 tackles and two interceptions. However, we would have given the nod to fellow safety Keelan Johnson.

Mike Haynes Defensive MVP

Winner: DT Will Sutton

Our Take: Duh again.

Babe Alex Demon Special Teams MVP

Winner: P Josh Hubner

Our Take: Hubner was a key part of the defense's success in 2012. With his ability to boom kicks for distance or pin them deep with accuracy, Hubner is arguably the nation's best punter.

Frank Kush Captains Award

Winners: S Keelan Johnson, LB Brandon Magee, RB Cameron Marshall, RG Andrew Sampson

Our Take: No upset here. Being the four team captains this season, it makes sense that these four Devils would win the captains award.
