While only two former Sun Devil heard their named called during last month's NFL Draft, 10 more were secured to rookie free agent deals, and two others--Oliver Aaron with Detroit and Eddie Elder with Arizona--were invited for a tryout at mini-camp for a shot at a training camp invite.
One of the names that had not been given a shot that drew some surprise was wide receiver T.J. Simpson. However, a team with a great need at the wide receiver position will give him a chance this weekend.
The St. Louis Rams are bringing in four unsigned players on a tryout basis for their mini-camp that begins this Friday, including Simpson. He is among three wide receivers in that group, along with Maryland's Tony Logan and former Jets' practice squad member Mike Campbell.
Simpson showed great promise as a deep threat as a junior in 2011, catching 29 passes for 481 yards (16.6 yards per reception), but was lost for his senior year when he tore an ACL in April. After being denied a waiver for an extra year of eligibility, he ventured out to find an NFL opportunity.
When healthy, the 6'1", 188 pounder has very good downfield speed and has potential to develop into a contributor in that role.
