Another offseason Saturday, another installment of the Saturday Football Fix, brought to you by House of Sparky and powered by the video wizardry of JediASU.
Our look this week goes back to one of the key games for the Sun Devils last year. ASU was riding high at 4-1, ranked No. 22 in the country, but were heading away from Sun Devil Stadium, where they have been terrible over the last five years. They faced a injury riddled but still very tough Utah team and, as expected, it was a tight battle into the second half.
The Sun Devils had just narrowed the Ute lead to 14-13, thanks to Alex Garoutte's 35-yard field goal. A good kickoff return had Utah starting their drive at their 39. The Utes lined up in a two-tight end set and called running back John White IV's number for a run up the middle. He was stood up after a short gain by Clint Floyd and Shelly Lyons...but Lyons wasn't content with merely making a tackle...
The Sun Devils scored five plays later on a Mike Willie touchdown reception, converted the two-point conversion and took a 21-14 lead. After the kickoff, the Utes began the next drive at their 30, and this time decided to go to the air. Quarterback Jon Hays dropped back...Lyons provided pressure and...
Floyd and Lyons strike again! A long Brock Osweiler scramble and two short Cameron Marshall runs later, ASU now held a 28-14 lead. Oh, how the fortunes of war change so quickly.
But the Sun Devil defense wasn't done with their ballhawking blitzkrieg.
Utah took over and managed to run three whole plays without committing a turnover! However, on their fourth of that drive...this happened...
Oh no they didn't! Floyd and Lyons not once, not twice but THRICE?!
Yes, sir/ma'am. Floyd's big hit set up Lyon's recovery and like their first collaboration, the ensuing ASU drive ended with a Sun Devil touchdown which would stand as the final score, 35-14.
