100 Day Sun Devil Football Countdown To Kickoff, #84: Danny Sullivan's Hail Mary Against Washington

Happy Thursday, Sun Devil Nation!

After four seasons of Rudy Carpenter under center for the Sun Devils, Danny Sullivan took over for the 2009 season. Expectations for Sullivan were not high, and many fans wanted to see more of Samson Szakacsy and true freshman Brock Osweiler.

Either way, Sullivan navigated the team to a 3-2 record heading into their October 17 battle against the Washington Huskies. With only 13 seconds left in a 17-17 game, Sullivan stood in the shotgun formation at midfield with zero timeouts.

It was first and ten, and the Washington defense lined up as to prevent the Sun Devils from gaining 20 yards and attempting the game winning field goal with Lou Groza winner Thomas Weber.

Instead of going for the field goal, Sullivan took it another direction entirely.

With the epic win, the Devils improved their record to 4-2. Unfortunately, it was also ASU's last win of the season, finishing the 2009 campaign with a 4-8 record.

On a side note, here's a telling excerpt I wrote about Vontaze Burfict after this win back in 2009:

Vontaze Burfict is extremely talented, but he needs to check himself before he wrecks himself: He runs around like he is about to kill whoever gets in his way, and I love having him on our side. But at times last night, he was literally out of control. We cannot have him committing so many penalties. It makes us look bad and ruined several good defense stops. In time, he will be considered one of the best. For now, he needs to realize what is important- making plays before the whistle blows.
