100 Day Sun Devil Football Countdown To Kickoff, #28: Mike Richardson Does The Super Bowl Shuffle

Mike Richardson is one of the greatest Sun Devils in Arizona State history. An absolute ballhawk safety, Richardson was a two-time All-American in 1981 and 1982. Richardson led the team two seasons in a row with eight and six interceptions, respectively, in 1980 and 1981.

Richardson, a captain of the 1982 Sun Devils team, went on to do great things in the NFL over a seven year career. Outside of a three game stint in 1989 with the San Francisco 49ers, Richardson spent his entire career as a member of the Chicago Bears.

Over six years in Chicago, Richardson intercepted 20 passes with one defensive touchdown. He was an important member of the 1985 Super Bowl champion Bears team, famous for its Super Bowl Shuffle video.

Referring to himself as "L.A. Mike," Richardson turns in a silky smooth lyrical performance in this campy, legendary video.

I'm L.A. Mike, and I play it cool.
They don't sneak by me 'cause I'm no fool.
I fly on the field and get on down.
Everybody knows I don't mess around.
I can break'em, shake'em,
Any time of day.
I like to steal it and make 'em pay,
So please don't try to beat my hustle
'Cause I'm just here to do
The Super Bowl Shuffle.

Interesting, to say the least. Unfortunately, in recent years Richardson has had several run-ins with law enforcement, including a conviction for cocaine and methamphetamine possession. Regardless of his recent transgressions, he should still be remembered as a colorful, talented Sun Devil legend.
