ASU Football: Sun Devils left out of first BCS poll of 2013

The AP poll and the Coaches' poll didn't show Arizona State any love on Sunday morning, and it appears the computers aren't fond enough of the Sun Devils to place them in the BCS rankings just yet.

The BCS rankings were released for the first time this season on Sunday evening and the Arizona State Sun Devils were left off of the list even after a strong showing in some computer rankings.

Despite defeating the previous No. 20 Washington Huskies by 29 points on Saturday, Arizona State was left off the week nine AP poll. The Sun Devils received 108 votes which meant that the Nebraska Cornhuskers earned the 25th spot by a mere nine votes.

Arizona State has been ranked in the AP top 25 twice this season, but has lost subsequent games against Stanford and Notre Dame after garnering their national ranking.

The Sun Devils were also left off the USA Today Coaches' Poll rankings and received even less recognition from college football's top dogs. Arizona State received just 51 votes in the Coaches' Poll which translates to a ranking of 29th.

The BCS poll weights three separate components evenly when forming its rankings. One-third of the ranking is compiled from the USA Today Coaches' Poll, one-third comes from the Harris Interactive College Football Poll, and one-third is based off of an average of six computer rankings. One of the computer rankings, the Sagarin Ratings, slotted the Sun Devils as the No. 9 team in the country.

The 5-2 Sun Devils stand behind teams from non-Automatic Qualifier conferences that did appear in the BCS rankings including the 6-0 Fresno State Bulldogs and the 7-0 Northern Illinois Huskies despite playing one of the nation's toughest schedules.

The Pac-12 put four teams in the first rankings as Oregon, Stanford, UCLA and a surprising Oregon State squad appeared in the initial release.
