Sun Devil fans do have one reason to celebrate tonight. Arizona State hockey swept Arizona with a 6-0 win Saturday, and the Devils' win streak over the Wildcats now stands at 34.
Freshman goalie Robert Levin didn't feel the pressure in his first start against rival Arizona.
"Coach prepared me well," said Levin. "I was confident going out there and confident in the guys. It was fun."
Levin went 22-22 in the shutout. Liam Norris had a goal and assist while Chris Burkemper added two goals. Sean Ritchie, Kale Dolinski, and Danny McAuliffe scored the other three goals.
Burkemper's second goal was so mystifying even he doesn't understand how the puck snuck past Dylon Hojnacki.
"I honestly don't even know," said Burkemper. "I got great pass from McGinty... I was getting dragged down by the defenseman and I managed to just slide it while I was falling and I guess it went five-hole."
Coach Greg Powers shook up the lineup Saturday night. Sean Murphy, Tommy Cooney, David Jantzie, and Troy Hoban all suited up while Zack Holstrom, Chris Blessing, Ryan Ostertag, and Brett Prechel took the night off.
Arizona played significantly better than they did last night, but couldn't catch any breaks. A few breakaways were foiled Levin and the post denied a hard shot from the blue line. It took ASU a lot longer to pull away compared to yesterday.
"I think we learned a valuable lesson," said Powers. "We can't just show up and go through the motions because I thought U of A outplayed us in the first period tonight and they had us on our heels."
Tonight was the second shutout of the season for the Sun Devils. They've yet to allow more than one goal in a game so far this season.
