As a freshman, Nathaniel Causey made quite a splash as a Sun Devil. He led the team with a .422 on base percentage and played predominately as the team's designated hitter.
He led all true freshmen in batting average (.288), at-bats (80), hits (23) and runs (13) and he will look to take a few games behind the plate from captain Max Rossiter.
The Gilbert, Arizona native was drafted by the Colorado Rockies out of high school, but opted to play for Arizona State.
Causey will play a critical part of ASU's success this season so lets take a moment to learn a little more about Causey.
Is there a story behind wearing the number 11?
"Not really. I was one of the last guys to pick numbers and it was just the one."
What got you interested in playing catcher when you were young?
"I like catching because you are always involved in every play and it gives me a challenge to be a little tougher."
If you could pick a former or current Major League Baseball player to have a round of batting practice with, who would it be and why?
"Let's see, that's a tough one. It would probably be either Ted Williams because I read a couple of his books on hitting or Barry Bonds because he has my favorite swing."
How do you feel the team has adjusted this spring to the amount of freshmen on the roster?
"We're kind of a younger team, but we have those leaders who have ‘been there and done that' like Trevor Williams and Max Rossiter. They really help lead the team and keep us in line. I feel like we have grown a lot since the fall."
How prepared do you feel to play your tough strength of schedule?
"We like playing better teams and plus, playing good teams early helps you get prepared for what you're going to be doing on the road to Omaha, you know? I'm actually looking forward to playing Arkansas twice for sure."
What are your personal goals for this season?
"Basically just to improve from last year and help the team win and I'd like to catch a lot. Just overall get better."
Who is your favorite teammate and why?
"I'd have to say probably my friend Drew Stankiewicz. I've known him my whole life and we have been friends down at school with each other forever and he is my roommate now."
If you were trapped in a room with the U of A mascot, what would you do?
"I'd paint it maroon and gold," Causey chuckles.
If your house was burning down and you could only take one thing, what would you save?
"Hopefully there are no people in there because I would have to save them first, obviously. But I would say my Adrian Peterson jersey. I'm from Oklahoma and I'm a die hard Sooner fan and Peterson is my favorite athlete by far."
If you could put yourself in any TV series, which one would you want to be in and why?
"Heroes because I loooove Hayden Panettiere."
Would you see yourself with Hayden?
"Yeah I wish. That would be awesome," Causey said as he laughed and smiled.
