This Week in Sun Devil Country: May 20-26

There is a new saying in Sun Devil country. Death. Taxes. And Arizona State softball (Don't worry, it will catch on, Doug Tammaro).The Sun Devils advanced to their seventh Women's College World Series in eight years under head coach Clint Meyers. The Sun Devils are an impressive 5-0 in the 2013 postseason and will play Texas on Thursday.

The Arizona State baseball team lost two of three games to Washington in Seattle this past weekend. ASU is just 2-5 in its past seven games and the Sun Devils begin postseason play this weekend. ASU will find out what seed they are and where they will be playing Monday morning.

Sun Devils Advance to WCWS: Behind the right arm of Dallas Escobedo, the ASU softball team advanced to the Women's College World Series with a series sweep of Kentucky. Arizona State faces Texas this Thursday in their first game of the double elimination tournament.

Kody Koebensky named to Rimington Award Watch List: The Arizona State starting center was named as a member of the 2013 Rimington Award Watch List earlier this week. Koebensky has played 29 career games, starting all 13 under center last season for the Sun Devils.

Sun Devil Legend Series: House of Sparky is counting down the greatest Sun Devils in school history this summer. Starting with jersey number 99 and ending with number one, we will break down the greatest Sun Devil by jersey number. The list started this week and will end in early August.

Sun Devil Hockey Adds to 2013 Recruiting Class: The Arizona State Hockey teamadded forward Chris Berkemper to its 2013 recruiting class this week. Berkemper played last season in the Eastern Junior Hockey League, scoring 17 goals and adding 25 assists in 72 games.

News and Notes

  • The Arizona State women's golf team took 5th at the NCAA Championships this week, its best finish since 2010. Sophomore Noemi Jimenez led the Sun Devils, finishing tied for 10th and becoming the 22nd All-American under head coach Melissa Luellen.
  • The Sun Devil softball team excels both on and off the field, as Sam Parlich and Bailey Wigness were both named Academic All-Americans this week. This is the second time receiving Academic All-American status for Wigness and the first time for Parlich.
  • Former Arizona State wrestler Cain Velasquez defended his UFC heavyweight championship Saturday night with a first round TKO victory over Antonio Silva. Velasquez is rated as the number six pound-for-pound fighter in the world according to the UFC.
