Though its usually slow in late June, we actually had a very busy week in Sun Devil athletics. The biggest news was for the first time since 2009, a Sun Devil basketball player had his name called in the NBA draft.
A big congratulations to the newest member of the Cleveland Cavaliers, Carrick Felix, who was selected with the 33rd overall selection in last Thursday's draft.
Felix is the first Sun Devil to be drafted since Jeff Pendergraph and James Harden were taken in 2009. Both are still playing in the league and Harden is an absolute star. Felix will have to prove himself in summer league but all signs point to him making the Cavs and being a rotational player.
As one Sun Devil leaves, another begins his journey in Maroon and Gold. Craig Nicholson was named the head coach of the ASU Softball team on Sunday. Nicholson spent the past seven seasons at Ball State University, leading the Cardinals to three MAC titles.
Let's face it, Nicholson woke up in a new Bugatti. The Sun Devils return their two top pitchers and eight position players from their 2012 everyday lineup. Nicholson is primed to lead this team back to Oklahoma City in 2014.
Now, on to the week in review
Five Stories to Read from Last Week
Carrick Felix Drafted by Cavaliers: As mentioned above, Carrick Felix was taken in the second round by the Cleveland Cavaliers. Felix improved in every season he played under Herb Sendek and led the Pac-12 with 13 double-doubles this past season.
Arizona State Releases Football Schedule: Football season draws near for Sun Devil fans, and this past week the Sun Devils released their preseason practice schedule. ASU will be at Camp Tontozona from August 12-17 and will begin practice in Tempe on August 6.
Sun Devils Lose Jaleel Wadood: On Tuesday, the Arizona State football recruit announced that he has de-committed from the Sun Devils and will explore other options. Wadood has scholarship offers from all the big boys in the West, including UCLA, USC, Oregon and Cal.
Craig Nicholson Hired as ASU Softball Coach: In his first major hire, Steve Patterson named Craig Nicholson head coach of the ASU Softball team. Nicholson won over 200 games at Ball State and, like Clint Myers, has coaching experience at Central Arizona Junior College.
Pac-12 Offensive Lineman Power Rankings: We continue our summer power ranking series as we turn our attention to the big nasties up front. See which team we feel has the strongest offensive line in the conference and where ASU falls in our rankings.
