The Backstory: If it isn't already clear, Frank Kush built up talent on both sides of the ball for the majority of his coaching tenure at Arizona State.
From the early to mid-1970's, Kush oversaw some of the best Sun Devil teams in history, as they won five of the six Fiesta Bowls from 1970-1975 with a 62-9 record.
One of Kush's veteran athletes from 1974-1976 was cornerback Mike Martinez, who saw one of ASU's best and worst seasons.
The Player: Mike Martinez (1974-1976)
In 1975, the Sun Devils saw an all-time best record of 12-0, a Fiesta Bowl victory and a No. 2 national ranking.
Amongst others, Mike Martinez played an influential role in that remarkable season.
The three-year starter caught seven interceptions on the season, putting him at No. 8 on ASU's all-time interceptions in a season list.
He was also one of seven All-Americans from the 1975 Sun Devil squad, along with his fellow cornerback Mike Haynes, Larry Gordon, John Jefferson, Freddie Williams, Willie Scroggins and Randy Moore.
Only one other team had more All-Americans than the 1975 Sun Devils.
Martinez's ASU career was a roller coaster at best, as his first season (1974) - anticipated to be nothing short of spectacular due to the level of talent - crumbled into a 7-5 finish. After the undefeated season the following year, the Sun Devils took a tumble to 4-7 in 1976.
Honorable Mentions:
Ryan Wood (1994-1995): Wood was the only Sun Devil drafted in the 1996 NFL Draft. The former fullback was selected 243rd overall (7th round) by the Dallas Cowboys. He is also the founder of the popular apparel company, Under Armour.
Kevin Galbreath (1988-1992): Galbreath played all four years as a Sun Devil and scored one of the biggest touchdowns in Territorial Cup history. In 1992 - when UA had one of the best run defenses in the country that featured future Hall of Fame linebacker Tedy Bruschi - Galbreath broke a fourth quarter tackle and turned it into a 51-yard touchdown run, leading to a 7-6 Sun Devil victory.
