"Boom!"

One word said it all. Five minutes before Allen High School linebacker Christian Sam was expected to announce his verbal commitment, the Sun Devil coaching staff gave it away.

The three-star linebacker from the Class of 2014 announced his decision on Thursday afternoon via Twitter, becoming the third commitment of the week for the Sun Devil football program.

At 6-foot-2 and 206 pounds, Rivals.com ranks Sam as the 25th best outside linebacker in the country and the 44th best player in the state of Texas for the Class of 2014.

Nearly every major recruiting service considers Sam a three-star recruit, and he becomes the second three-star commitment from the state of Texas this week. Sam joins Lancaster High School wide receiver Nick Alexander who announced his intentions on Sunday afternoon.

Sam chose Arizona State over offers from nearly 20 different schools including his finalists Oklahoma, Baylor, Texas Tech, and Mississippi.

While Sam is still relatively undersized for the outside linebacker position, the Sun Devil coaching staff believes he has the potential to grow into his frame and become a playmaker on the defensive side of the ball.

3TV's Brad Denny reports that Sam could play the SPUR position at Arizona State, which is where JUCO transfer Chris Young started at last season.

After Sam's announcement, Sun Devil coach Todd Graham made things official when he took to Twitter to deliver the good news.

Sam is the eighth verbal commitment for the Sun Devils in the Class of 2014. For complete coverage of Arizona State recruiting, click on our "Recruiting Story Stream."
