Typically teams wait until after the season is over to run their fan appreciation events, but the Arizona State hockey program does not believe in that.

On September 5th, the team is inviting its fans for a free BBQ starting at 7 p.m. at Oceanside Ice Arena in Tempe. Immediately following the dinner, fans are encouraged to get their first taste of 2013-14 Sun Devil hockey by watching the Maroon and Gold game at 8:30 p.m.

This game is a Sun Devil tradition and roughly 50 players will scrimmage to make their final impressions to the coaching staff to determine if they made the Division I roster. Head coach Greg Powers and his staff will have to cut the group of 50 down to 30 skaters come September 6. Sun Devil hockey reporter Mitch Terrell reported earlier this summer that ASU scored an A+ grade in recruiting so this may not be your typical scrimmage.

Players participating will be from last year's Division I roster, the Division II team, incoming recruits and maybe even a few walk-on athletes who can impact this year's program will take part.

As for the fan appreciation said, the Sun Devil hockey team has offered up a few treats. There will be prizes handed out to the fans who dress up and show their craziest school spirit.

Yes, everything from your ASU striped tube socks to some wacky wigs should come out of your closet because the top five most decked out fans will go home with some sweet gifts.
