ASU Football: Week 4 opponent results and recap

Most teams in college football played cupcakes, so it comes as no surprise that every future team on our schedule won their games on Saturday.

USC: Defeated Utah State, 17-14. Cody Kessler completed only 13 of 27 passes, but the stout USC defense held Chuckie Keeton to 179 yards passing and forced eight punts. The Aggies were also only 5 for 17 on third downs. NEXT UP: Arizona State looks to get back on track with the maroon monsoon home game against the Trojans.

Notre Dame: Defeated Michigan State, 17-13. An ugly defensive struggle took place between Notre Dame and MSU. Neither quarterback could get anything going in the air, combining for 30 out of 66 passes complete with 277 total passing yards. The Fighting Irish look infinitely beatable if the Sun Devils can put together a solid gameplan on both sides of the ball (and stop allowing their punts to be blocked). NEXT UP: A very tough road test against Oklahoma in Norman.

Colorado: Colorado had a bye week. NEXT UP: The Buffs hit the road to play Oregon State.

Washington: Defeated Idaho State, 56-0. Nothing to see here, folks. The Huskies crushed an FCS opponent. NEXT UP: UW hots Arizona in Seattle in an East coast primetime game on Fox.

Washington State: Defeated Idaho, 42-0. A big confidence builder for the offense before they play Stanford. NEXT UP: Mike Leach and company host the very talented Stanford Cardinal.

Utah: Defeated BYU, 20-13. I won't say it's a surprise, but BYU sure looked bad against the Utes. Taysom Hill threw 30 incomplete passes while Travis Wilson methodically led the Utes to two touchdown scores. A road game in Salt Lake City is not the gimme it was in 2011 for the Sun Devils. NEXT UP: It's a bye week for the Utes.

Oregon State: Defeated San Diego State, 34-30. Sean Mannion continues to have a solid season, this time completing 38 passes for 367 yards and three touchdowns. Oregon State is pass-happy this season and they will struggle against top-flight competition who will not be afraid of their rushing attack. NEXT UP: Hosting Colorado in Corvallis.

UCLA: Defeated New Mexico State, 59-13. UCLA paid respect to Nick Pasquale, running an offensive play with only ten players in his honor. Despite the big win, the Bruins turned the ball over three times and have a lot of room for improvement, so this bye week comes at a great time for an undefeated UCLA squad. NEXT UP: A well deserved bye week.

Arizona: The Wildcats had a bye week and were able to watch Washington on television one week before their game. Will Arizona come out fresh and surprise the Huskies? No one can tell, particularly after they did not play anyone of consequence in their out of conference slate. NEXT UP: A road tilt against Washington, Arizona's first test.
