The Arizona State Sun Devils could not complete a sweep of the Southern California schools, as Herb Sendek and company fell 87-72 to the UCLA Bruins Sunday night.
The Sun Devils led 12-6 after four minutes, but UCLA went on a 29-6 run in the first half and led the Sun Devils by 17 at halftime. Arizona State allowed 50 points in the first half against the Bruins, which was the most points they have allowed in a half this season. UCLA freshman guard Zach Lavine scored 15 points in the first half and ended the contest with 19 points off the bench.
Arizona State started the game the game 4-7 from the field, and ended the first half just 6-20. The Sun Devils were also hindered by eight first half turnovers and a 61-percent mark from the free throw line.
Showing second half resolve, the Sun Devils got within nine midway through the second half, but UCLA was able to pull away and was never really threatened in the final 20 minutes.
Five Bruins finished in double figures, led by Lavine's 19 points. Jordan Adams scored 15 points and grabbed seven rebounds. Kyle Anderson posted a double-double, with 19 points and 13 rebounds and Bryce Alford added 13 points off the bench.
Jahii Carson struggled most of the game, scoring just nine points on 4-17 from the field. Carson picked up his fourth foul early in the second half, forcing him to the bench for an extended time in the half. Jordan Bachynski scored 14 points and grabbed eight rebounds.
The Sun Devils were led by senior guard Jermaine Marshall, who scored 25 points on 9-14 shooting. The Sun Devils not named Jermaine Marshall combined to shoot just 15-42 from the field.
The Sun Devils (13-4, 2-2) will continue Pac-12 play on Thursday, when they travel down to Tucson to play the No. 1 Arizona Wildcats.
