ASU Football Recruiting: The Sun Devils' greatest need leading up to Signing Day

Signing Day is approaching quickly and the Arizona State coaching staff has a limited time to put the finishing touches on its 2014 recruiting class. The Sun Devils have one of the top classes in program history, but there is still work to be done as Arizona State has a few needs to address.

If the Sun Devils are going to truly consider their 2014 recruiting class complete, they must lock down at least one more offensive line commitment.

Since Todd Graham arrived, recruiting offensive linemen has been one of the Sun Devils' greatest difficulties. A look at Graham's 2013 recruiting class shows that Arizona State did not sign an offensive lineman out of high school.

While the Sun Devils did add former 5-star recruit Christian Westerman as a transfer from Auburn last year, enticing linemen at the high school level to come to Arizona State has been far more challenging.

This year, Arizona State has just two current commits along the offensive line in Colorado native Sam Jones and local recruit Quinn Bailey. The Sun Devils actually had three offensive line commits for a nice stretch in January, but New Orleans native Alex Anderson flipped his commitment to Texas to follow former Oklahoma State offensive line coach Joe Wickline.

Following Anderson's de-commitment, the Sun Devils set their sights on Hamilton High School product Casey Tucker. Tucker is a 5-star recruit with outstanding run-blocking capabilities that could have helped him earn a starting job early in his Sun Devil career, but he decided prior to making an official visit to Arizona State that he would take his talents to Stanford.

The timing of Tucker's Stanford commitment hurt because Arizona State was hoping to make one final impression with an official visit scheduled for last weekend, but Tucker opted to make his decision and leave the Sun Devils scrambling.

Right now, there are still two offensive linemen that Arizona State is pursuing heavily and a third whose name is mentioned on occasion. The Sun Devils did an outstanding job over the weekend of Jan. 17 when both Kenyon Frison and Ty Barrett made official visits to Tempe.

Frison was previously committed to Utah while Barrett had committed to Texas Christian, and the Sun Devils helped influence both recruits to de-commit and re-open their recruiting. As it stands, the Sun Devils are finalists for both recruits, but landing just one on Signing Day would be a huge victory for the Arizona State program.

Frison is now considering Arizona State, Nebraska, and Oklahoma along with Utah and Barrett is looking at Arizona State, UCF, and Texas Christian among other schools.

A third offensive lineman who the Sun Devils might have an outside shot at landing is Kaleb McGary, a Tacoma, Wash. native who ranks as the second-best prospect in his home state. McGary is considered a 4-star recruit and stands 6-foot-9 while weighing 270 pounds. He has made four official visits already, and could make his final trip of the recruiting season down to Tempe this weekend if the Arizona State staff can lure him to come.

McGary's name has popped up from time to time when potential Arizona State line recruits are discussed, but banking on Frison or Barrett is a much better option at this point in the cycle for Graham and his staff.

The Sun Devils are set at most positions for the class of 2014, so its efforts over the next week and a half will likely go to securing a third offensive line commit so that the outstanding skill position players that will be arriving in Tempe have players to block for them.
