ASU Football: '12 Plays of Christmas' No. 9 Highs and lows

It was a great play, but a painful game.

Chris Humphreys-USA TODAY Sports

Arizona State jumped out to an early 17-0 lead in Boulder against Colorado before the Buffaloes came back with 14 unanswered points. The Sun Devils only took a 24-14 lead into halftime. Colorado continued to stick around with a field goal five minutes into the third quarter, making the score 31-17. ASU was trending downwards and fans of the maroon and gold began to have an uneasy feeling about this matchup until the Sun Devil signal caller came to the rescue with his feet.

Play No. 9: Taylor Kelly's 50-yard touchdown run @ Colorado

2 Points: The play changed the momentum of a game

3 Points: The play occurred in a Sun Devil victory

5 points: The play was a Sun Devil touchdown

7 points: The play went for 40 or more yards

Total: 17 points

The Sun Devils maneuvered their way out to midfield in five plays. On 1st and 10, Colorado sent two linebackers on a blitz. Tyler Sulka picked up one coming from the right edge. The other bit hard on Kelly's read option fake handoff to D.J. Foster. This left the middle of the field wide open for the Eagle, Idaho native. He ran 50 yards for the touchdown to put ASU up 38-17, removing most of the doubt any fans had about the game being well within hand.

It would be the last touchdown the Sun Devils scored against Colorado, and Kelly's last touchdown before going down with a broken foot. Kelly went on to miss three games, but one of his more notable contributions before the injury was also one of his last.
