With an 8:00 P.M. local start time, most fans expected another classic #Pac12AfterDark battle heading into the matchup between Utah and Arizona State. Instead it was the defense played by both teams that stole the show. 60 minutes was not enough to decide this one, and a late night was extended even further as the Sun Devils tried to keep their College Football Playoff hopes alive in overtime. With the score tied at 16, Arizona State won the coin toss and elected to play on defense first. The Utes went three and out, setting up a 35-yard field goal for "Automatic" Andy Phillips. He wasn't so automatic this time around, with the ball sailing wide left. That meant all ASU needed was three points to walk off Frank Kush Field a winner.
Play No. 2 (tied): Zane Gonzalez's Game-Winning Field Goal
3 Points: The play occurred in a Sun Devil victory
8 Points: The play occurred during the the fourth quarter or overtime
10 Points: The play occurred in overtime of a Sun Devil victory
11 Points: The play won the Sun Devils the game
Total: 32 points
After a pair of Demario Richard four-yard runs, D.J. Foster lost two yards on third down. That set up a 36-yarder for Zane Gonzalez, who had already made three field goals on the day. He did have one miss in the second quarter, however, and Sun Devil Nation was holding its collective breath as he tried to put one last try through the uprights. The silence would soon turn into elation. Gonzalez's kick hooked in, sneaking past the right upright and giving Arizona State its seventh win of the season.
