Team USA will have a Sun Devil flair about this season.

Six ASU players were selected to USA's squad for the World University Games in Grenada, Spain from Feb. 4-14.

"It's a great honor and experience for our kids to go over there and play such good hockey," coach Greg Powers said.

The ASU players headed to Spain are forwards Ryan Belonger, Sean Murphy and Chris Burkemper as well as defensemen Ed McGovern, Connor Schmidt and Jordan Young.

Murphy and Young are headed to the Games for the second consecutive year.

"It's awesome, especially back-to-back years," Young said. "Knowing a bunch of the guys that came back, and getting more experience and knowing what to expect going into it is a little more comforting."

McGovern is the only freshman selected to Team USA from ASU. McGovern leads ASU defensemen in goals with seven.

"It's an honor to get chosen to represent our country," he said. "I couldn't be more happy about it."

Last year the Sun Devils had five representatives: Murphy, Young, Danny McAuliffe, Brian McGinty and Alex Temby.

Because of conflicting schedules, the six players will miss the series against the University of Arizona in Tempe Jan. 30-31 and the road trip to Colorado Feb. 5-7.

"There's some coaches around the league that don't support their players missing games, but I told the World University Games people, I tell them every year, they can take as many of our guys as they want," Powers said. "I view at as they're going to come back so ramped up snd geared up and ready to go playing at a high level that we'll be that much more prepared come nationals.
