Some like the AP Poll, some like the Coaches' Poll, but anyway you slice it, ASU finished outside the top four in the one that mattered most.
The Sun Devils finished No. 15 in the final rankings in the first year of the College Football Playoff rankings.
ASU made some noise in the rankings in November, when it came in at No. 6 following the Nov. 8 win against Notre Dame. If the loss to Oregon State the next week didn't kill the playoff hopes, the Territorial Cup loss to Arizona Nov. 28 did. That came became a de facto Pac-12 South title game when Stanford beat UCLA.
The Pac-12 was represented well in the rankings. Oregon won the conference and made the playoff with the No. 2 rankings. Arizona came in at No. 10, with No. 14 UCLA, No. 22 Utah and No. 24 Utah also in for the rankings for the conference.
