It's not often that defensive backs are a high school team's hardest hitter, but in the case of Jamal Scott, it's hard to imagine the Magnolia High School football team having a player that can match Scott's tackling prowess.
In fact, it's hard to imagine Magnolia High School (Anaheim, Calif.) having a player to match Scott's skill set in the last five years as the Sentinels have struggled mightily in Orange League play.
On National Signing Day, Arizona State received a letter of intent from Scott who looks to become a difference-maker in the Sun Devil secondary.
Scott is a case of a player rising above the talent surrounding him, and his highlight film certainly backs up that statement. A 3-star recruit according to both Rivals and Scout, Scott looks like a man among boys as he stalks his prey from the defensive backfield.
At 6-foot-2 and 200 pounds, Scott could fit the Sun Devils' defensive scheme as a safety or as an outside linebacker as he possesses an outstanding ability to drive his opponents back upon contact.
Scott committed to Arizona State in August before his senior season, and he has also drawn interest from a few other Pac-12 schools including Oregon State and Utah.
Though he is more physically imposing, Scott calls to mind Alden Darby who was under-recruited as a 2-star prospect out of Southern California and didn't receive offers from either UCLA or USC. Now, the Sun Devils are hoping that Scott can turn into the next overlooked SoCal native to shine in the Sun Devils' defensive backfield and show their Pac-12 South foes what they missed out on.
