Next week House of Sparky will begin our "ASU Moment of the Year" tournament, with the 16 best moments from the athletic season. This week we will randomly introduce all 16 moments, then reveal our seedings and match-ups next week, where you, the reader, will vote on what was the ASU athletics Moment of the Year.
It is no surprise that the biggest victory in the Herb Sendek era makes it on our list of the best moments from this past athletic season. What makes it a little sweeter is that the victory came against arch rival Arizona.
The odds were certainly stacked against the Sun Devils. Arizona came into the contest ranked No. 2 in the nation, had only one loss on the season and throttled the Sun Devils 91-68 just a month prior. However, when the dust settled it was Arizona State pulling out the 69-66 victory in overtime, causing pandemonium in Wells Fargo Arena (see picture).
Arizona State held the Wildcats to just 36-percent shooting and a meager 4-16 from 3-point territory. Arizona shot 16-30 from the free throw line, helping the Sun Devils erase a five-point halftime deficit.
It was Jermaine Marshall leading the charge for Arizona State, as the senior finished with 29 points on 11-23 shooting. Jahii Carson added 17 points and six assists with Jordan Bachynski putting up 13 points, seven rebounds and eight blocks. None of which was more important then his block of TJ McConnell in the final seconds of overtime to preserve the victory.
The win over Arizona goes down as the best moment from Arizona State basketball this season. It is up to the readers to decide where it falls within Arizona State's other athletic achievements.
