DJ Calhoun was named a freshman All-American by the Football Writers Association of America Wednesday, becoming the eighth Sun Devil to be named to the list in the award's 14-year existence.
After enrolling early last January, Calhoun dominated in spring practices, creating a lot of hype for the true freshman who was a four-star recruit. He finished ninth on the team with 35 tackles in 2014 and is the fifth Sun Devil under Todd Graham to earn some kind of freshman All-American honors. Calhoun also made history in his first game, becoming just the eighth Sun Devil to ever start a game as a true freshman in their first opportunity.
Originally looked at as a potential Devilbacker this past season, Calhoun eventually moved to the WILL linebacker spot and was called upon in bigger games to step up when Laiu Moeakiola went down against UCLA. His best game of his 2014 campaign came against Colorado in Boulder when he had seven tackles and his first career fumble recovery.
His job is far from safe for next season though. Carlos Mendoza should be fully healthy and the Sun Devils are currently bringing in three linebackers in their 2015 class. Three-star recruits Malik Lawal, Khaylan Thomas and most notably stud junior college transfer Davon Durant, who is ranked as the No. 9 best JUCO player in the country by ESPN, will all surely compete in fall camp for playing time next season
