ASU Hockey: Former Nebraska-Omaha forward Jake Montgomery to rejoin NCAA, commits to Sun Devils

He played at Nebraska-Omaha this season, and will play his next college hockey game as a Sun Devil.

What do current Sun Devils Connor Schmidt, Ryan Belonger, David Norris and new commit Jake Montgomery have in common? They all played NCAA Division I hockey before coming to ASU.

Montgomery is less of a traditional commit and technically qualifies as a transfer under NCAA rules. He started this season at Nebraska-Omaha, played six games and returned to his junior team in Sioux City of the USHL.

Because of NCAA transfer rules, Montgomery will sit out next season and be eligible to play for the Sun Devils in 2016-17, similar to David Norris's transfer late last year. This season is freshman year and he will able to redshirt next season while he is sitting out, joining the team in 2016 as a redshirt sophomore.

It's no wonder Nebraska-Omaha and now ASU wanted him. He starred at Shattuck-St. Mary's prep in Minnesota, the same prep school 2017-18 commit Gage Mackie currently attends. He went to the USHL's Sioux City Musketeers for two years after Shattuck, scoring 35 goals and 35 assists for 70 points with a plus-24 rating in 114 games.
