Pat Murphy, the former manager of the ASU baseball team, has been named the interim manager of the San Diego Padres. This comes days after the Padres fired longtime manager Bud Black. Murphy had been the manager of San Diego's AAA affiliate in El Paso.

Murphy managed the Sun Devils from 1995-2009, reaching the College World Series four times (1998, 2005, 2007, 2009). Murphy finished with a record of 629-284-1 and coached the likes of Dustin Pedroia, Andre Ethier, Brett Wallace, Ike Davis, Mike Leake and Kole Calhoun.
However, in 2009, Murphy resigned among investigations into the ASU baseball program. The Sun Devils hired a legal firm to investigate allegations of academic fraud, improper recruiting travel and violations relating to ASU players working for a non-profit headed by Murphy. This led to ASU being suspended from postseason play in 2012.
Following his departure from ASU, Murphy was hired as a special assistant in the Baseball Operations Department of the Padres. He managed the Eugene Emeralds in 2011 and 2012. For the past three seasons, Murphy managed the AAA affiliate of the Padres, in Tucson in 2013 and in El Paso in 2014 and 2015.
