Our No. 2 Moment of the ASU Football Season: Zane Gonzalez’s record-breaking field goal against UCLA
No kicker in NCAA history has made more field goals than Zane Gonzalez, and the senior was able to break that record earlier this season for Arizona State.
Gonzalez’s four years in Tempe were the definition of consistency.
The Deer Park, TX product made 25 and 22 field goal attempts, respectively, in his first two seasons, then had a career-high 26 as a junior. That left him just 16 shy of breaking the all-time NCAA record, and he hit that 16th on October 8 against UCLA.
Leading 20-13 early in the fourth quarter, head coach Todd Graham called upon his kicker to try a 46-yarder to put the Sun Devils up two possessions on the visiting Bruins.
Gonzalez knocked the ball through the uprights with authority, breaking the record and also making what ended up to be the game’s winning points in the process. His team would go on to win the game 23-20, making sure the accomplishment wasn’t soured by a loss.
Of course, the senior also broke the school’s all-time field goal record two weeks prior to that against California. And if that wasn’t enough, his effort in Arizona State’s win at Texas-San Antonio pushed Gonzalez to the top of the all-time Pac-12 points list.
