The House of Sparky staff is handing out its end of season awards. The first honor to be given out in our series is Team MVP.
Our Team MVP: senior kicker Zane Gonzalez
Gonzalez connected on 23 of 25 of his field goals this year, including a FBS best 7 of 9 from 50 yards or more. The place-kicker’s range was put on full display when he made a 59-yard kick against Colorado, the longest field goal in Division I play this year.
He is the highest-scoring kicker in FBS history, amassing 492 total points.
A Groza Award finalist, “Legatron” was crucial to the Sun Devils’ early-season winning streak, as well.
During ASU’s win over UTSA, Gonzalez made three field goals in a game the Sun Devils won by four. During its 10-point win over Cal, Gonzalez scored three field goals.
Gonzalez also hit three field goals in ASU’s three-point victory over UCLA, setting the record for career field goals during the contest.
His contribution to special teams shouldn’t be overstated either.
Gonzalez recorded a touchback on 75 percent of his kickoffs, forcing opponents to harmlessly start on their own 25-yard line often.
His consistency and contribution are why he’s our 2016 Team MVP. Check back in tomorrow to see who will be named our Offensive Player of the Year.
Other players considered: N’Keal Harry (WR), Kalen Ballage (RB)
