ASU Football Recruiting: Sun Devil commitment list entering bowl season

A look at where the Sun Devils stand on the recruiting front.

NCAA Football: Arizona State at Texas-San Antonio Soobum Im-USA TODAY Sports

The Arizona State Sun Devils’ 2016 season is over, but that doesn’t mean Todd Graham & Co. are taking any breaks.

Earlier this week, former Alabama quarterback Blake Barnett committed to play for the Sun Devils next season. The former five-star’s verbal marked the first commitment ASU has secured since it earned Mesa (Ariz.) receiver Curtis Hodges’ back in July.

Graham told local media following a practice in the latter stages of the year he doesn’t focus on the recruiting trail in-season. Now, with the Sun Devils idle until the spring, he can get to work on adding to his team.

Fielding desirable talent hasn’t been an issue for ASU since Graham has arrived in Tempe. According to’s recruiting database, Graham’s 2012 commit group ranked 21st nationally; his 2013 class ranked 42nd; the 2014 class was ranked 21st; the 2015 class was ranked 26th; and his 2016 group ranked 25th.

That’s good for an average ranking of 27th nationally.

There’s several keys to Graham’s running success along the recruiting trail. Former staffers Mike Norvell and Chip Long (who are now at Memphis) were important to ASU landing several key pieces through Graham’s first five years. In his short tie in Tempe, Jay Norvell was a proven commodity to ASU’s recruiting ability, but he’s heading out to Nevada. Now, offensive coordinator Chip Lindsey and tight ends coach Delvaughn Alexander, among other coordinators, must combine their acumen with that of recruiting director Donnie Yantis and Graham to bolster the Sun Devil roster.

During the season, they may have been quiet, but if landing Barnett was of any indication, this group is here to play and is going to be active through National Signing Day (Feb. 1).

Here’s where ASU stands at the moment in regards to hard commitments of its 2017 class, using the ratings of 247 Sports, Rivals and Scout as reference.
