After dropping a pair of games two weeks ago at Long Beach State, Arizona State has been on a roll as of late. The Sun Devils have won five consecutive games and now return home for a three game set against UC Davis.
Here is your weekend preview:
Game One - Friday at 6:30 p.m.
Game Two - Saturday at 6:30 p.m.
Game Three - Sunday at 12:30 p.m.
Arizona State Update
The return trip to Fullerton couldn't have gone better for the maroon and gold. Just nine months after being eliminated from the NCAA Tournament on the same diamond, Tracy Smith's club marched into Goodwin Field and came out with a quick two-game sweep of Cal State Fullerton. The team did use 11 pitchers throughout the pair of games, which could play a role in how the staff is managed this weekend against the Aggies.
At the plate, first baseman David Greer is leading Arizona State with a .404 batting average. The junior has played in all 13 games thus far in 2016, driving in 11 runs and scoring 12 times himself.
UC Davis Update
The Aggies come to Phoenix with a record of 5-7 on the young season. They started the year 1-4 but have righted the ship as of late, coming off recent single game victories against Michigan and South Dakota State. Unlike the Sun Devils, they will have plenty of fresh arms to use this weekend. The team has only played twice since March 2 due to multiple weather-related issues, and both of those games were relatively low-scoring affairs.
UC Davis is led offensively by outfielders Mark Cardinally and Alex Aguair, who are currently hitting at .438 and .348 clips, respectively. Those are the only two players on the roster that are hitting above .300 at the moment. Matt Vaughn's team is in some serious need of consistent offense if he wants to win 30 games for a second consecutive season.
Notes
- Saturday's game is designated as "Don Diamont night". The actor which stars in The Bold and the Beautiful will be on hand to sign autographs and take pictures with fans.
- Smith hinted earlier in the week that RHP Hever Bueno could make a return to the mound this weekend. Bueno has missed two starts due to soreness in his arm.
- Colby Woodmansee is tied for first in the Pac-12 with RBIs. He and Oregon State's Logan Ice both sit at 16 heading into the weekend.
