ASU Football: Sun Devils conclude second week of spring ball

The Sun Devils have now logged six spring practices ahead of the 2016 season.

The Arizona State Sun Devils football team concluded its second week of spring practice on Friday at the Kajikawa Practice Fields.

Below are some observations and notes from the session.

Position Battles

Quarterback

Not too much change here, not that we expect anything different to occur during spring ball on this front. Reps have been distributed between Manny Wilkins, Bryce Perkins and Brady White, respectively.

Offensive Line

Here is how the first-team offensive line was arranged during team tempo drills: Evan Goodman (LT), Sam Jones (LG), Tyler McClure (C), Quinn Bailey (RG), and Stephon McCray (RT).

Secondary

Here is how the first-team secondary unit was arranged during team tempo drills: Kareem Orr (corner), James Johnson (safety), Chad Adams (safety), along with Maurice Chandler and De'Chavon "Gump" Hayes (corner). Chandler and Hayes appeared to rotate at corner.

Narratives to Watch

Gump at Corner: Hayes is transitioning to becoming a primary defensive back for the Sun Devils. The position could maximize the usage of his athleticism, however he said he is still available for the ASU offense. Hayes said he is comfortable anywhere the team places him on either side of the ball. He also said the biggest factor in learning his new role is understanding the schematic concepts of Todd Graham's defense.

ASU is a run-first team: The offensive line is a young unit, but Graham lauded the strides it made on Friday, noting that he was very impressed with the tenacity the group showed in the power-run game. Of note, running back Kalen Ballage scored on back-to-back inside runs during team sessions.

New Faces in the Front-Seven: Koron Crump and Malik Lawal both made appearances at edge/outside-linebacker spots during team drills on Friday. ASU hopes to find a contributor at the Devilbacker from their current options.

Tim White is a weapon: After practice, offensive coordinator Chip Lindsey said that he plans to use White in a variety of ways, using movement prior to the snap of the ball to get him in situations he'll be able to get open in space. It was apparent on Friday, as he saw a couple of targets come his way during the segment of practice open to the media.

Other Notes

  • Ellis Jefferson was substituted due to a left leg injury during one of the team drill sessions.
  • Christian Sam and Kody Kohl were amongst at least 10 players sporting green non-contact jerseys on Friday.

Standouts

JoJo Wicker: Wicker made a few sacks during team session.

Jalen Harvey: He didn't log a reception during the session available to media, but there were a few plays where Harvey got away from his defender to get open. It left a very positive impression.
