After not seeing a player drafted on Day 1 of the 2016 MLB Draft, two Arizona State Sun Devils have been selected thus far on Day 2. Junior shortstop Colby Woodmansee and junior catcher Brian Serven were both selected in the fifth round Friday afternoon.
Serven was the first Sun Devils taken of the board when the Colorado Rockies selected him with the 140th overall selection. Serven was the 10th collegiate catcher taken and the sixth player selected by the Rockies.
Woodmansee was drafted a bit lower than most believed he would be when the New York Mets called his name with the 160th overall selection. Some expected Woodmansee to be picked on Day 1. Woodmansee, like Serven, was also the 10th collegiate player taken at his position.
Three ASU signees were selected on Day 1. Shortstop Gavin Lux went No. 20 overall to the Los Angeles Dodgers, Infielder Bo Bichette was drafted 66th overall by the Toronto Blue Jays and pitcher Reggie Lawson was picked 71st overall by the San Diego Padres.
It is unlikely that any of those ASU signees will make it to campus as they will each be offered seven figure signing bonuses to begin their pro careers.
