With their first bout of the 2016 season just a week away, the Sun Devils took the practice field on Saturday inside of the Verde Dickey Dome and went through pre-game routine, which included drills and workouts. Media was permitted to view the entire pre-game routine, however was removed prior to full 11-on-11.

Pre-game routine

Lining Up

Head coach Todd Graham was mic’d up, giving instructions to coaches and players to get into their proper positions. The team began lined up on the 45-yard line, with Graham asking for specific players such as defensive lineman Tashon Smallwood up front, saying “I want you up front, those of you who are supposed to be leaders.”

Individual Drills

As a unit, the team did a set of jumping jacks, chanting “D-E-V-I-L-S” before breaking with players running to their specific position drills. Graham said coaches must work through pre-game drills.

Following position drills, the first- and second-team units worked through seven-on-seven drills. Graham had pass rushers work separately, and said he wanted workouts to be “sharp and crisp.”

Here’s how the first team was lined up:

Manny Wilkins (QB); Demario Richard/Kalen Ballage (RB); N’Keal Harry (wide), Cameron Smith (wide), Tim White (slot); Kody Kohl (slot)

Note: neither sets of teams actually worked through any plays.

After seven-on-seven, Graham told the team to work through 11-on-11 drills. The prep session was followed by turnover, punt, and point-after-attempt drills before breaking for what will be the tunnel to conclude warm-ups.

“Muscle Beach”

Linebacker Khaylan Thomas and defensive lineman George Lea were spotted wearing green non-contact jerseys.
