ASU Football: Christian Sam still on Muscle Beach, other practice notes

The Sun Devils prepare for a showdown with USC.

Arizona State began prep for its first road Pac-12 game of the season against the USC Trojans. Media was allowed to view stretching and individual drills today.

During its tackling/takeaway circuit, ASU’s defense worked on strip-sacks, coming around a player to punch the ball out from behind. The Sun Devil defense hasn’t forced a bevy of turnovers, but two interceptions against California were key in their comeback-win.

Injury/availability updates:

Junior linebacker Christian Sam still looked limited today. He walked through most stretches and headed over the Muscle Beach to ride the stationary bike. Graham said he is hopeful to get Sam back this week. Should Sam return, it would be the first game with the entire projected first-team defense as Salamo Fiso made his return from suspension against California.

Senior defensive lineman Ami Latu walked through stretches next to Christian Sam. Latu seemed to have a brace on his left leg, and I didn’t spot him participating in individual drills although he was next to his unit while they drilled.

Junior long snapper Mitchell Fraboni was fully dressed and taking reps during individual drills. He played last week against California and seems to be up to full speed.

Notes:

Scouts from the Chicago Bears and Pittsburgh Steelers were seen at practice.
