Arizona State (4-8-2, 1-5-1 Pac-12) traveled up to Boulder to take on the Colorado Buffaloes (8-5-3, 2-4-1 Pac-12) in a midweek matchup, as both teams looked to end their multiple game losing streaks, but it was the Sun Devils who fell, 3-0.
As of late, the Sun Devils had been struggling to keep the ball out of their own net in the first half. Thursday was no different, as it only took the Buffaloes five minutes to jump out to a 1-0 lead when Marty Puketapu buried a rebound for her sixth goal of the season.
Colorado did not slow down after putting up the early goal. Just nine minutes later Megan Massey doubled the Buffs’ lead as she received the ball in the box from Taylor Kornieck to put away her second goal of the season.
Colorado added one more goal before half in the 31st minute as Puketapu scored her second of the game from Kornieck’s second assist to take a 3-0 lead, which would prove to be more than enough for the Buffs.
In the second half, the Sun Devils came out hungry, as they fired nine shots on the Colorado goalkeeper, but they were unable to breakthrough. In total, ASU had 18 shots, with six of them on target.
Despite the 3-0 defeat, Arizona State returned starters Nikki Panas and Angela Boyle from injury, which should prove to be crucial down the stretch.
Arizona State will look to get back on track on Sunday as the Sun Devils take on the Utah Utes on the road at 1 p.m.
