After dropping two critical non-conference games against San Diego State and Texas Tech to begin the season, things were looking bleak for Arizona State as the 2017-18 campaign got off to a rough start.
Things wouldn’t get any easier either, as the No. 24 Oregon Ducks came to town to open Pac-12 play as double-digit favorites and holding a streak of ten straight victories over ASU.
Redshirt junior quarterback Manny Wilkins and sophomore wideout N’Keal Harry both had huge nights offensively and Oregon quarterback Justin Herbert would follow suit with a terrific performance for the Ducks.
It was ASU freshman placekicker Brandon Ruiz that would eventually steal the show, though, as his 41-yard field goal late gave the Sun Devils a 37-35 lead that the defense would preserve on Oregon’s final possession.
It was Ruiz’s crowning achievement during his impressive freshman year, in which he was 18 for 25 overall and converted six field goals from 40-plus yards. Below are highlights of the game and the kick from our very own Blaine McCormick.
