It was the first game of the season, and the Arizona State Sun Devils were struggling to fend off the New Mexico State Aggies.
The Sun Devils had looked sluggish on offense for most of the first half.
It was midway through the third quarter when Manny Wilkins looked to take a shot downfield. The ball seemingly found its way into the hands of redshirt sophomore transfer John Humphrey.

Wilkins to the snap in shotgun, and after using a play-action fake to Kalen Ballage, Wilkins took a couple steps back and surveyed the field.
He stepped up and launched a perfect spiral up the middle of the field, which Humphrey caught about five yards out of the end zone. He only needed his momentum to carry him the rest of the way.
With Humphrey running a simple go route, it turned into a crucial play in a close game. The touchdown grab made it 21-13 in a game that the Sun Devils would narrowly win 37-31.
Humphrey’s touchdown fueled a strong offensive third quarter that the Sun Devils used to push a lead they would not relinquish.
