Smith played in 30 games and started 18 in three seasons as a Sun Devil. He caught 60 passes for 908 yards and six touchdowns over that span.
Last season, Smith made 11 catches for 183 yards in eight games as a redshirt junior as he battled to overcome injury.
The 6-foot, 207-pound receiver did not play in 2015 because of a knee injury, and subsequently redshirted.
The move will reunite Smith former ASU offensive coordinator Chip Long and wide receivers coach DelVaughn Alexander, whom both joined Notre Dame’s staff earlier this year.
Smith’s departure is the third different development in recent weeks, following the medical retirement of safety Armand Perry and transfer of cornerback Kareem Orr.
