Perkins signed with the Sun Devils in 2015. The former Chandler High star was ranked the fourth-best dual-threat quarterback in the state and considered the 14th-best quarterback prospect overall nationally by ESPN.
He redshirted during the 2015-16 season, lodged deep on the depth chart behind starter Mike Bercovici. He competed for ASU's vacant starting job entering the 2016-17 season, however, suffered a season-ending neck injury in August forcibly removing him from the competition.
Perkins announced he was cleared to return to the field in late January, but during spring practices was held out of full-team drills, including the Sun Devils' spring game.
It was initially reported Perkins intended to transfer on May 12, as he was considered out of the conversation for a starting role believed to have come down to returning starter Manny Wilkins and Alabama transfer Blake Barnett.
